Geographical Indication (GI) is a quality seal that certifies the origin of a product or service, ensuring that it has unique characteristics linked to its production location. In Brazil, this protection is regulated by the Industrial Property Law (Law No. 9,279/96) and is divided into two categories:
Indication of Source (IS): certifies that a region is traditionally known for producing a specific product or service.
Denomination of Origin (DO): certifies that the product's characteristics are directly linked to the natural and human conditions of the region.
Benefits of Geographical Indication
Market Differentiation and Added Value: GI-certified products gain greater recognition and market value.
Protection Against Copying and Misuse: Certification prevents unauthorized use of the geographical name.
Boost to Local Economy and Tourism: Strengthens regional economy and promotes gastronomic and cultural tourism.
Access to New Markets: GI-certified products are more competitive and valued internationally.
Examples of Brazilian Products with Geographical Indication
Queijo do Serro (MG)
Cacau do Sul da Bahia (BA)
Vinhos do Vale dos Vinhedos (RS)
Café do Cerrado Mineiro (MG)
How to Apply for a Geographical Indication?
The request is submitted to the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) through a producers' association. The process includes proving the product's tradition and quality, as well as defining the geographical area.
