Geographical Indication (GI) is a quality seal that certifies the origin of a product or service, ensuring that it has unique characteristics linked to its production location. In Brazil, this protection is regulated by the Industrial Property Law (Law No. 9,279/96) and is divided into two categories:

  • Indication of Source (IS): certifies that a region is traditionally known for producing a specific product or service.

  • Denomination of Origin (DO): certifies that the product's characteristics are directly linked to the natural and human conditions of the region.

Benefits of Geographical Indication

  1. Market Differentiation and Added Value: GI-certified products gain greater recognition and market value.

  2. Protection Against Copying and Misuse: Certification prevents unauthorized use of the geographical name.

  3. Boost to Local Economy and Tourism: Strengthens regional economy and promotes gastronomic and cultural tourism.

  4. Access to New Markets: GI-certified products are more competitive and valued internationally.

Examples of Brazilian Products with Geographical Indication

  • Queijo do Serro (MG)

  • Cacau do Sul da Bahia (BA)

  • Vinhos do Vale dos Vinhedos (RS)

  • Café do Cerrado Mineiro (MG)

How to Apply for a Geographical Indication?

The request is submitted to the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) through a producers' association. The process includes proving the product's tradition and quality, as well as defining the geographical area.
